Winners of the HK Prize and Other Awards

The Hong Kong Prize is an esteemed award presented to students attending tertiary institutions. Established more than two decades ago, this competition welcomes submissions from a broad spectrum of academic fields. The winner will receive both a cash prize and internship opportunities with one of Hong Kong’s premier businesses. The South China Morning Post earned three awards at the 19th w3 Awards – widely considered among the most prestigious global digital marketing awards. Talking Post with Yonden Lhatoo won gold in general video – news and politics category; additionally, their Op-ed series on coffin homes (ie coffin homes) received silver status; while their video report about a Hong Kong police raid received gold recognition.

Last October, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra won Orchestra of the Year at the 2019 Gramophone Classical Music Awards ceremony, widely considered the Oscars of classical music. HK Phil was honored for their recording of Richard Wagner’s Ring Cycle conducted by Jaap van Zweden for Naxos release.

Ten Years won the Best Feature Film award at this year’s Asian Film Awards and later received a ban in mainland China for portraying Hong Kong as an urban backwater; one scene in particular that caused outrage was when protester self-immolated outside British consulate in Beijing.

Hong Kong artists were well represented at this year’s Art Prize with nine shortlisted. Pakistani sculptor Sameen Agha won the Grand Prize with her sculpture A Home Is a Terrible Place to Love while veteran actor and martial arts director Sammo Hung received the Lifetime Achievement award. Other winners include mixed media artist Michelle Fung for Red Bean Stalk and painter Demet for PPE (Paint Palette Emulation).
