The Sidney Prize and the Konrad Adenauer Prize
The Sydney Prize honors investigative journalism that exposes social and economic injustices in Australia. The winner will receive a $10,000 prize and have their work published by Sidney Prize Judges Patrick Lenton, Alice Bishop and Sara Saleh at Overland, an Australian literary journal edited by these same judges. Established to commemorate American-Australian financier and philanthropist Sidney Hollander (1901-1972) who promoted equal rights for African Americans as well as leading fight for civil rights, social welfare, racial equality among others.
The June Hartnett Prize for Proficiency in Second Year Ancient History is awarded annually to students demonstrating exceptional proficiency in second year ancient history units of study. Funded by Leonie Hayne as a tribute to June Hartnett, who studied Latin and ancient history at the University of Sydney. Administered by the Department of History on behalf of Aisling Society Sydney annually after consultation with annual examinations panel; determined as best student enrolled in senior courses or advanced/honours-level units on Roman History, Greek Studies or Latin.
Established by Dr Ben Sandford Cullen’s family, colleagues, and friends to honor his life and scholarship in 1984, this award is given annually to a student who achieves the highest mark in any advanced unit of Jewish Civilisation, Thought & Culture studies. Recommendation of award is determined by Head of Department in conjunction with Hebrew Biblical Jewish Studies Postgraduate Co-ordinator; most deserving student receives this prize.
Established by the Trustees of the Sir Geoffrey Dale Memorial Fund to honor its founder, Sir Geoffrey Dale (deceased), this prize is given annually to the student who achieves highest marks in Economics III Honours units of study. Each year it is decided by consultation between Registrar and Professor of Economics and Business to award this honorable prize to deserving candidates.
The European Studies Konrad Adenauer Prize is given annually to the student with the best overall academic result in third and fourth year units of European Studies within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Major of Linguistics; eligibility must be confirmed by their Department Coordinator.
Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize
The Overland Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize is an award for exceptional short fiction of up to 3000 words that explores travel through narrative. Submittals from writers across Australia and internationally are welcome, with prizes including first prize of $5000 plus publication in Overland as well as two runners-up prizes of $1500.00 each. Patrick Lenton, Alice Bishop and Sara Saleh of Overland magazine have shortlisted eight stories and will soon select winners; entries must be received by 1 August 2022 for consideration.
