The HK Prize and the Nobel Peace Prize
The Hong Kong Prize (HK Prize) is an award that recognizes individuals worldwide who have made outstanding contributions, rewarding them with cash awards and access to Hong Kong’s premier research facilities. Each year this competition attracts thousands of applications; its aim is to encourage secondary school students worldwide to follow their passions while expanding global perspectives. Students interested in entering must be nominated by their teachers.
The winning research will be selected by an independent jury panel and presented at an awards ceremony. Furthermore, they will have the chance to spend up to six months at one of Hong Kong’s premier research institutions, networking with prominent scientists while further honing their professional skills and attending relevant international conferences and seminars related to their field of study.
Established by Lui Che-woo, the Hong Kong Prize aims to recognize those who advance world civilisation and inspire others towards building a harmonious society. This is evident in its logo design which juxtaposes two happy elements – pearl and jade amulet that has happy connotations in both Chinese and Western culture – thus embodying its intention. As one of Asia’s premier awards, thousands of applicants vie annually for it with winners receiving both substantial monetary prizes as well as access to Hong Kong’s premier research facilities; giving winners an incredible chance to advance their careers further within one of world science hubs!
Beijing’s crackdown on freedom of speech has drastically diminished Hong Kong’s once-vibrant civil society and press freedom index; both have reached their lowest levels for decades. Even while subject to Beijing’s new national security law criminalising subversion, secession, and collusion with foreign forces, many Hong Kong activists continue to speak out against its oppressive regime; some even becoming prisoners of conscience.
At such a trying time, it is vitally important that we remember those fighting for our rights and preserving human dignity. 15 university professors from 10 countries have joined together to nominate five imprisoned pro-democracy leaders as candidates for the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize, showing their courage and perseverance despite facing considerable odds.
Whoever wishes to nominate someone should read and understand the rules carefully prior to making their submission. Judges will consider academic achievements and extracurricular activities when selecting finalist applicants; their reputation of the judging team; overall quality of applications submitted; as well as whether the applicant would donate any money towards charity when making their decision. hk prize winner will be announced on February 2022! Good luck!
