Protecting Sydney Dy Pools

Australian swimming pools have increasingly been fenced off to protect them from being washed away by swell and tide, built over 100 years ago using outdated construction techniques that leave them more susceptible to currents, swells, rainfall and currents than modern sea structures. Climate change exacerbates this problem further by raising sea levels, making ocean pools even more likely to be flushed out or hit against cliffs.

Residents in coastal towns and cities living along the coastline find leisure pools an indispensable amenity, providing them with a place to swim in the sunshine, meet friends and family or simply unwind by reading a book. Pools like this one should be preserved to allow future generations to appreciate them as part of our Australian heritage.

But that has proven difficult; they face council infighting, claims of pork-barrelling and lack of transparency, heritage concerns and criticism from health organisations. North Sydney pool’s budget has ballooned past $100 million and opening date postponed to 2025 – “a good example of how not to manage an infrastructure project”, according to Kylea Tink, independent federal member for North Sydney.

Zoe Baker, mayor of Zoe’s local council, agrees. She finds this project extremely stressful to manage and admits her disappointment that an early opening hasn’t materialised; therefore she intends to recoup her massive bill through fashion week shows, production companies and private parties while noting federal independent MP’s anti-pork barreling legislation as an important safeguard against similar political folly.

Even with all their challenges, saving our sdy pools remains essential. They not only add aesthetic beauty to coastal landscapes but are an integral part of keeping people safe in waterways as well as helping protect wildlife populations and delicate ecosystems.

No matter your goal is there’s nothing quite as rewarding than spending your day relaxing on the beach or at a pool. When taking a dip remember that these iconic and endangered pools need your support! Before visiting any sdy pool make sure it is open and safe; alternatively use online tools to search nearby pools that feature their features, reviews and facilities before booking them and don’t forget your towel!
