How to Win at Roulette
Roulette is an alluring combination of glamour, mystery and excitement that draws gamblers around the world. Although seemingly simple at first glance, its depth lies within its strategy – using incorrect strategies may lead to losses rather than winnings!
A game of roulette uses a rotating wheel with one or more zeros and various betting opportunities, including sections with red or black numbers or groups of numbers on it. When the wheel stops turning, a small ball is launched onto it which then makes its way around again until one number or grouping of numbers (red or black) comes to rest on the surface – and players who bet on these numbers (or their color, red or black), win when it finally rests.
Each roulette table displays a placard detailing the minimum and maximum bets, so when selecting your bet type make sure it falls within your budget and meets your expectations – for instance the Dozens bet only pays out 2-1 and has a house edge of 33%!
Once you’ve selected where to place your chips, focus on placing “outside” bets that offer easier wins with lower house edges – such as single-number bets or those featuring groups of three or more numbers and any symmetry on the layout (such as red numbers arranged on the left side of the wheel).
Inside bets can be more difficult to win and have a higher house edge, yet offer greater payouts. Inside bets involve placing specific numbers or groups of numbers in the center of a roulette table’s map; bets on these specific areas typically pay out 2-1 with odds of only one in six being won on. For instance, placing bets on either of the first or second dozen will pay out with pay out odds of 1 in 6.
When changing your bets, just give the dealer a note and request new set of coloured chips based on the denomination you select. He or she will mark each chip to indicate its value before giving them to you. Should your winning bets clear the table, he or she will pay out accordingly.
