The Sidney Prize
The Sidney Prize, established to commemorate journalist and trade union pioneer Sidney Hillman, is presented each month by the Sidney Hillman Foundation to an outstanding piece of journalism.
Over its nearly 400 year history, Trinity has made a profound mark on British life across every aspect imaginable – religion, politics, war, business law and science among them. Sidney has produced numerous Nobel Prize winners and internationally-acclaimed scientists, such as Oliver Bulman and Harry Whittington (who discovered the Burges Shale), polymath Samuel Phillips whose novel Caleb Stukeley became a three-volume best seller; F H Neville; botanist W T Stearn; as well as historians Charles Aleyn and Sir Roger L’Estrange – distinguished Victorian literary historian Sir Roger L’Estrange (also pioneer newspaper editor, translator of Aesop’s Fables Cicero and Seneca) who served King Charles 11). As well as producing writers – not only novelists but poets, literary biographers Richard Boston and Robert Fellowes, Shakespeare scholar Edward Gibbon, historians John Morris and Peter Ackroyd; political cartoonists, film directors and opera directors as well as Premiership football club chairman/best-selling authors in their day; there has even been speculation of Sherlock Holmes having existed here!
Our prize program comprises scholarships, research grants and fellowships for postgraduate students as well as annual literary prizes in essays and poetry – some established through bequests from early twentieth century donors reflecting the College’s long history of scholarship and cultural exchange.
